Pilates was originally invented by Joseph Pilates as a way to exercise in bed for soldiers coming back injured from World War 1. Pilates is a bit similar to Yoga as it develops ones muscles by lengthening and stretching ones muscles. Pilates differs from many other types of workouts as it increases not only muscle mass but balance, core strength, flexibility and is also considered by some fitness trainers as a light aerobic workout.
Pilates is not about the size of your biceps or the maximum bench press you can impress others with. Pilates is about getting a healthy fit body by keeping consistent and either joining a professional pilates course, an online pilates lesson, or buying a home pilates kit. Either way, pilates is about breathing properly, and relaxing the body between movements thus improving your mental state.
Pilates is made up of six principles which are concentration, control, precision, breath, centering, and flow. Every pilates workout is compromised of these six pilates principles which help differentiate pilates from other workout methods, thus making it a truly unique method of working out.
